Bismarck: A Life

By Jonathan Steinberg

Otto von Bismark was known as the "Iron Chancellor" for good reason. He drove the Prussian state to become the leading power in Germany. Edging out Austria in a series of short wars and then unifying the German state under his rule and the nominal control of the German Emperor.

In Bismark: A Life, Jonathan Steinberg uses the words of the great man's contemporaries to draw a picture of a near dictator, driven by power to become the leading figure in European affairs. Besides unifying Germany and defeating France in the Franco-Prussian war, he was also a liberalizer. He was the first to attempt to introduce universal health care to a major western state. His political machinations are legendary. Yet he was finally thrown out of office by Kaiser Wilhelm II who was as wilful as the now aging chancellor, but lacking in the cunning and intelligence that made the old man great.

Bismark's great claim to fame would always be the unification of Germany. For good or ill, a united Germany would henceforth be a major player in world affairs.
