His stories about that time period are enlightening, telling much about his personality and about America. Cain marvels at how far the nation has come from that time period. He tells a story about how when he was a boy he and his brother tasted the water from both a black water fountain and a white one. They wondered what the big deal was about having separate fountains because the water from each tasted the same.
