Larding the Lean Earth, by Steven Stoll. Fascinating book on the history of soil in early America. Mr. Stoll's history sheds a new light on the American culture even as he analyzes the effects of different farming techniques on the flow of American history. He largely refrains from politicizing the work until the final few pages although much of the narative on soil erosion, progressive farming, conservation and even land improvement has explosive implications.
