Pick of the Week: Pakistan: In the Shadow of Jihad and Afghanistan, by Mary Anne Weaver. Pakistan has become one of the focal points of U.S. foreign policy. It merits an in-depth and cogent study. This is precisely what Mary Anne Weaver has provided in this fascinating and fluid book. Ms. Weaver spent considerable time in Pakistan; working as a correspondent she interviewed many of the leading players in Pakistani politics, including Benazir Bhutto and Pervez Musharraf. She thoroughly explores the various regions of the country and makes clear and understandable the antecedents of the Muslim Jihad in Afghanistan as well as its later manifestation in an organization known as al-Qaeda. This is a vital, important and very readable work. Highly recommended.
