The True Believer : Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements, by Eric Hoffer is a modern classic. Written in the 1950s it describes how individuals become sucked into the maelstrom of such movements as Muslim Fundamentalism and Communism. He sees individuals giving up their sense of self-worth and transfering it into a movement they perceive as a greater good, when in actuality they are dedicating themselves to a program of self and societal destruction.
