Democracy in America

By Alexis de Tocqueville

Liberals like to believe that America has no culture of its own. As if America is a blank slate upon which they can imprint socialist ideas. Though the roots of American culture lie in England, the polyglot nation has absorbed the best of what immigrants have had to offer. To truly understand America and its people they should read Alexis de Tocqueville's insightful work, "Democracy in America".

Tocqueville made and extensive tour of the United States in the early 1800s. In the course of his traves and visits with individuals in a variety of communities, this insightful young man made many observations which he set down in his book. More than a travel log, this work showed the definitive character of the American.

He saw the people as freedom loving, aggressive, moralistic, and intelligent. Far from being a caricature, the work delves into what it meant (and means) to be an American. Tocqueville's insights are as valuable today as they were nearly two hundred years ago when he set them to paper.

"Democracy in America" is one of those books that should be read by all Americans and anyone who wants to understand them.
