Across a Harvested Field
By Robert Goble
Ambrose Bierce was known in his day as a gifted writer with an acerbic wit. His works were mainly short stories that pitilessly depicted people in strange circumstance. His most famous short story, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", was actually made into an episode of the "Twilight Zone".
His "Devil's Dictionary" is often referred to by literary misanthropes for inspiration and illumination. This dictionary-like work is actually an exercise in piercing finger-poking. An example definition: Bigot - a person who is "obstinately and zealously attached to an opinion that you do not entertain."
Bierce was born in Ohio and resided in Indiana (also the home state of Kurt Vonnegut). He fought in the Civil War and experienced battle at Chickamauga. Many of his stories are derived from his Civil War experiences.
The end of his life is a mystery. He left the U.S. for Mexico when he foresaw that women would achieve the right to vote. There he disappeared. Fictional representations of his end abound and this mysterious end has served to make him somewhat of a cult figure even today.
This volume is a fair representation of his work and a worthy addition to the Library of America. It contains 880 pages, some of which will bring a laugh, others a grim smile and still others a scratch of the head.
