Runaway!
By Dennis Maley
Although he is freed in the will of his dying master a literate 14-year-old slave boy is robbed of his emancipation by his master’s widow. He makes a daring escape and flees westward to the American prairie.
To attain his freedom he must journey across a territory ripped apart by the conflict over slavery. He is witness to stolen elections, printing presses thrown in the river, church houses nailed shut.
While slavecatchers literally dog his trail he has to rely on folk stories and campfire songs to find a slim thread of hope and help him, the Underground Railroad.
This is an exciting adventure story that allows the young reader to learn about the conditions and life in Antebellum South. Great learning through literature.
