There seems to be a rising possibility that the sitting President of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton, could be impeached. Proceedings had already been proposed even before the present scandals of possible subornation of a witness (Monica Lewinsky), and possible bribery by the Chinese Red Army. Congressman Bob Barr along with 18 other congressmen requested that the house judiciary committee begin the process. At the time he submitted that request, the president may have been guilty of accepting bribes, in the form of campaign contributions, for access to his power. It may be time to read up on the issue. The Conservative Bookstore staff has put together a list of a few books that you will want to take a look at. Click on a title for more information or to order: The Federal Impeachment Process: A Constitutional and Historical Analysis (hb) by Michael J. Gerhardt is a good place to start. Besides a thorough explanation of the process, it goes into the historical background of impeachment up to the present day. Presidential Impeachment by John R. Labovitz is a good book to peruse in the present political crisis. All manner of government officials can be impeached, from judges to presidents. This book focuses on the latter. For a historical view of the impeachment of a President that almost succeeded in removing the man from office, you can read about The Impeachment Trial of Andrew Johnson. Johnson was Lincoln's successor and was brought before congress in an impeachment hearing for defying congress' right to approve his appointments. He only escaped ignominy by one vote. Next there is Emmett Tyrrell's now infamous book on the subject, The Impeachment of William Jefferson Clinton. This book mixes fact with fiction in a work that is almost prescient of what has happened and what is likely to happen to the Presidency in the wake of the Paula Jones hearings and the China scandal. And for a good, inexpensive and basic book on the Constitution in general, there is Bill Huebsch's book, Constitution Booklets: With Study Guides. ![]() |
