The Founding Fathers believed that the only way to secure liberty to the individual was to ensure that every man possessed the right to carry with him the force necessary to secure that liberty. Individuals and states refused to enter into the grand compact that we now know as the United States until the right to bear arms was embedded in the Constitution. The rights that our forefathers saw as essential are being eroded by special and elite interests today. The following list of books relate to gun rights, their history, the present assault upon them, and how to defend against the assault.
More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws, by John R. Lott is a fascinating study in how increased gun ownership and concealed weapons permits have reduced crime where such laws are implemented. Mr. Lott's study has caused an uproar in the liberal press, yet his facts are unassailable. For an in-depth and readable look at the effects of gun control pick up a copy of this book.
The Origin of the Second Amendment: A Documentary History in Commentaries on Liberty, Free Government and an Armed Populace (hb), by David E. Young contains brief commentaries on the Second Amendment from the period when the Constitution was being written and ratified by the 13 original states. This is a fascinating study that leads one inevitably to the conclusion that there would be no USA if individuals and states had not been assured through the Second Amendment that their right to bear arms would be preserved through the ages.
Perhaps the most well known commentator on gun rights is Alan Gottlieb. His work on the subject has been extensive yet to the point. In The Gun Grabbers (pb, 168pp) Mr. Gottlieb looks at the Gun Control Crowd, who they are, what there agenda is, how they operate and where they get their money.
Once you find out who is out to do away with gun rights you are going to want to find out how to defend them. Here Alan Gottlieb comes through again with a book that will find a prominent place in your library:
Things You Can Do to Defend Your Gun Rights (pb), by Alan Gottlieb and David B. Kopel. In the Origins and Development of the Second Amendment: A Sourcebook, (hb) by David T. Hardy we find another excellent work on the formation of the Second Amendment.
Alan Gottlieb has zealously defended the rights of gun owners for years and his dedication has gone beyond mere bland commentary. He is Chairman of the Second Amendment Foundation and works intimately with other gun rights organizations. He has two more books that are a great benefit to gun owners:
The Rights of Gun Owners, by Alan Gottlieb (pb, 252pp)
and the Gun Rights Fact Book (pb, 252pp), by Alan Gottlieb.
