The Romantic Revolution: A History

By Tim Blanning

In this excellent, detailed story of the Romantic Movement, Tim Blanning reveals the significance of one of the great revolutions of the 1800s. He firmly places its beginnings with the French philosopher, Rousseau, who fought a vociferous war with science and the enlightenment.

The book profoundly illustrates the movement away from analysing the actual effects of behavior as it was so ably analysed by the great enlightenment philosophers such as Hume, Smith, Montesque, and Locke. With Romanticism the world became enamored with the notion that it was more important to "feel" than to know.

Romanticism is surely one of the roots of modern liberalism where a political social policy is measured not by its ultimate effects, which can be fairly accurately predicted, but by the intentions of the authors and the immediate gratification of the beneficiaries.

Though this work does not even pretend to political analysis and does not draw the lines between Liberalism and Romanticism, it provides considerable food for thought and ammunition for the conservative thinker.
