After America: Get Ready for Armageddon

What will the world be like when America finally relinquishes her role as the great super-power, the arbiter of world conflicts? Expect a deluge. As Mark Steyn so aptly illustrates in his book, "After America: Get Ready for Armageddon", the world will descend into chaos.

Liberal pundits have long thought American power undeservedly robust. They seem to have no perspective on history. There have only been a few periods in history when chaos and the rule of might makes right were not predominant. (See the pax Romana, pax Britannica and the pas Americana.)

What gives America the right to lay down the law around the world? Well, the fact of the matter is, most countries, when they get in the position to lord it over their neighbors, indeed do lord it over their neighbors with territorial aggrandizement and the like. (See European history in general including the Napoleonic Wars and WWII.) The U.S. is relatively benign in its own interests and is more interested in fair play.

Mark Steyn is probably the most witty conservative pundit and author in the world today. He has ably taken up the mantel of William Buckley as the leading conservative thinker of our time. Erudite, wise, and convincing this transplanted Canadian is a must read whether it is in the form of a column or in this latest of his works.
