The American Way: Why Superman Got it Wrong
By Mr. Thomas Purcell
In June of 2011, Action Comics (DC) released Superman #900. In this issue Superman renounces American citizenship. In a misguided gesture to multiculturalism he decides to become a member of a 'global' community. Unfortunately, Superman and his writers, forgot the reasons why truth, justice and "The American Way" are actually the most important things that he at one time represented.
"The American Way: Why Superman Got It Wrong" written by author Thomas Purcell, describes how American Exceptionalism was a hard won process. It was not something Americans were born with. The path led from a small group of stalwart farmers. Their devout religious belief caused them to flee the tyranny of religious oppression. Their love of liberty provoked them to flee heavy taxation. In the course of leaving behind their old countries they created the most powerful and wealthy nation in the history of mankind. This movement was remarkably swift compared to the rise of previous civilizations such as Rome, Egypt, and the European great powers of Edwardian England and Napoleonic France.
How America became great is a matter of historical record. However, the world is jealous and would have America be more like the declining nations of Europe -- socialized and stagnant with planned economies and limited freedoms.
"The American Way" makes the case that the reverse should be true. The rest of the world should strive to be more like America. Purcell explains pivotal points in American history when the American people stood fast to their heritage of self sufficiency, rugged individualism and self-reliance. As a result America is stronger for it and still shines out as a beacon to the world.
